US Senator from the State of New Jersey Robert Menendez proposed to designate Russia as a country sponsoring terrorism and to tighten sanctions against Moscow because of the poisoning of former military intelligence officer who had worked as a double agent on behalf of the United Kingdom, Sergei Skripal, Washington Examiner reports.
Menendez compared Russia with the DPRK.
“The Trump administration designated North Korea a State Sponsor of Terrorism following the poisoning of Kim Jong Un’s relative in Thailand. The administration should also consider whether this designation should apply to Russia." he said.
The senator also called on the Trump administration to recognize the danger that the Russian government continues to pose for Americans and the world.
The list of countries sponsoring terrorism already includes Iran, Syria, Sudan and the DPRK. In 2015, Cuba was removed from the list.
The day before, US President Donald Trump said that, Russia, probably, stands behind poisoning the former colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Federation Sergei Skripal and his daughter.
According to Trump, he is going to talk with the British Prime Minister Theresa May about the attempt on the Skripal.
Reference, on March 5, a former Russian intelligence agent Sergei Skripal, convicted in Russia for espionage in favor of London, and his daughter were hospitalized in critical condition after poisoning in a restaurant in a shopping center in the British city of Salisbury.
