Today, 75% of the soldiers with the Armed Forces of Ukraine serve under contract, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko told during the parade in honor of the 25th anniversary of Independence as cited by a QHA correspondent.

In two years of the war more than 300 thousand Ukrainians came to the front via military enlistment offices. Volunteers were the first one to come, then those who have been mobilized and then it came to contractors. Today, 75% of the Ukrainian army consists of contractors, said the President.

Poroshenko also stressed the importance of holding a military parade during the war with the aggressor.

In the course of the parade Ukraine will see a real progress in the strengthening of the defense capability. The society will see the new army, created in two years almost from scratch. The nation will make sure the Armed Forces of Ukraine are getting stronger and are ready to continue fighting for the state security. The Ukrainians are ready to continue fighting for its independence, and our enemies must understand it, said the Supreme Commander of Ukraine.

Today, Ukraine celebrates the 25th anniversary of independence. August 24, 1991 Ukraine declared its independence (prior to that it was part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in the USSR).

The Declaration on Ukraine’s Independence as of August, 24 1991 was adopted the same year on December, 1 by national vote.

The event was declared a state holiday only in June 1992 when the Supreme Council decided to consider August, 24 the Independence Day of Ukraine. In fact, the first Independence Day was celebrated on July 16, 1991 - in memory of the fact that on July, 16 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of Ukraine’s State Sovereignty.
